An update from CMLPA President Carolyn Cutrona Russell:
THANK YOU AND A CALL TO ACTION!
- A BIG THANKS to everyone who showed up in canoes, kayaks and fishing boats to assist with the invasive milfoil removal by divers on August 1st! The DASH divers worked all day in the vicinity of the dam and we had a great crew of volunteers scooping up little pieces of milfoil that escaped the divers!
- PLEASE SET ASIDE A FEW HOURS DURING AUGUST TO MONITOR ONE OF THE BOAT LANDINGS (Chief River Road public landing, Woodhaven Resort, or Callahan Lake Resort). If you choose to monitor at one of the resorts, please obtain permission from the resort owner.
We are required to monitor boats for invasive milfoil for 100 hours in 2025 and another 100 hours in 2026 for our DNR grant. We get credit even if no boats show up while you are at the launch site! We are far from 100 hours needed this year.
Please send in a report of the hours you spend and the DNR report form for boat monitoring (attached to this email) to Roger Amundson (raamundson123@comcast.net ) or bring the report to the next Lake Association meeting on August 23rd. - STAY CURRENT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF THE NEWLY FORMED CALLAHAN AND MUD LAKE DISTRICT! Visit their website at callahanandmudlakedistrict.org and opt in for notifications to keep you up to date on District activities. NOTE: The Annual Meeting of the Lake District is on Sunday, August 31st from 9:00 to 12:00 at the Seven Winds Casino, Lodge & Conference Center, 13767 County Hwy B. Coffee, Tea and Juice and breakfast pastries will be served! Doors will be open for sign in at 08:30
- THE NEXT MEETING OF THE CALLAHAN/MUD LAKE ASSOCIATION WILL BE AUGUST 23RD AT 9:00 at the Round Lake Town Hall Building on County Rd. A. Never been to a meeting? Haven’t been for a long time? Please join us! Everyone is welcome!

Agenda:
- Update on DNR grant activities:
- How successful have the chemical and mechanical invasive milfoil removal efforts been this summer? How is our water quality?
- What remains to be accomplished this summer for the grant?
- Election of Lake Association officers: Vice-President, Secretary, and Member-at-Large.
Please feel free to volunteer yourself or to nominate someone for one of these offices. Contact Carolyn (ccutrona@iastate.edu) if you are willing to continue serving in one of these offices or if you would like to volunteer or nominate someone. You may also volunteer or nominate at the meeting. - Discussion of future activities of the Lake Association.
- Should we plan an occasional future social activity? People seemed to enjoy our get-together after the educational program last month.
- Should we invite an occasional speaker? I thought that someone from the DNR Fish Hatcheries could talk to us about fish management activities in Sawyer County, and specifically about plans for stocking Callahan and Mud Lakes in the future. Other topics could include loons, sandhill cranes, beavers… I was thinking of 20 to 30-minute presentations, including questions. I wouldn’t want to keep you in a meeting for too long!
All the best,
Carolyn Cutrona Russell (515)520-2490
President, Callahan/Mud Lake Protective Association
